How Self-Storage Companies Make Billions
Americans collectively have more than five billion items sitting at home that they no longer use, according to a 2019 survey by online marketplace Mercari. One-click shopping and the globalization of overseas manufacturing has made it easier than ever for consumers to acquire goods. According to the Self Storage Association, an industry trade group, more than 10% of households in the U.S. rented a self-storage unit in 2020, 18% more than in 2005. The self-storage industry has continued to outperform during the pandemic, with several companies reporting strong occupancy and healthy demand, according to the research site Yardi Matrix. But with headwinds threatening the economy will self-storage companies like Public Storage and Extra Space Storage be able to maintain their momentum? And what will new disruptors like Neighbor and Clutter mean for the future of the industry?

The digital storage industry revenue has surpassed 70 billion dollars in 2018. On the other hand, the self-storage industry earned 13 billion dollars in annual revenue in 2020. Apparently, digital clutter has become a bigger problem than physical clutter.

Millenials use storage the most because many are poorer than previous generations. Very few own a house to store the little stuff that they own. Also the social safety net just isn´t there like in previous generations with many divorced parents who no longer live together in the house they grew up in.

The viewpoints expressed in this discussion thread are very interesting.

Parth Gutka
16 天 前
@MyBloomingLife look at it this way, if something had a chance of happening at lets say 10% and then the chances increased by 80% there would be now a chance of 18%, because 80% of 10 is 8, although the numbers they present are not accurate, I see many people making this mistake.
wertytrewqa
22 天 前
@MyBloomingLife Yes, I was aware of that, but I think this tactic in general is a way of BS'ing people. You will often see people trying to overstate things by using this tactic. The report that was being quoted here was released by a company that works in self storage so it is their interests to make people think their business is booming.

Once cloud computing came about and doctor's office and law offices no longer needing storage space, I thought the self storage industry would contract; also with the minimalist movement and the popularity of the books on decluttering; moreover you don't need 'stuff' like you use because the internet provides lots of entertainment; also with people moving more than they use to, I would think people would be into acquiring less belongings so you have fewer items to move. Another reason you need less belongings is that buying something if you need for many items is a click a way, so before the internet, you had to go out and drive someplace to buy something so that is a pain, so the temptation to save an item would be higher in the past. .....So I have been putting off buying stock in these companies, e.g. Public Storage and Extra Space. And I was wrong in my predictions. ........ I still worry about the prospects of the industry....I mean between my city and the next city...the road is lined with self storage, not to mention how many are self-storage facilities are sprouting up in both communities. I wonder if it is over saturated and no room for more growth. Self Storage is expensive, so I have wondered this idea about self storage doing well in a recession because people have to downsize and having enough money for (expensive) self storage seems unconvincing. I think people should try and have less stuff, however at the same time, I think people should have a self storage unit if they can afford it.....storing christmas decorations or other belongings in the garage is inadvisable.most items should be stored in a climate controlled area. It is a nice to have a home without clutter and to have an organized storage unit as well. One person I know who retired years ago had all of his legal records in a self storage facility; he decided to scan all of the records on a computer drive, and cloud, and it took over a year for him and his wife on a daily basis, I think more than a few hours a day. I wonder if he would not have been better off just paying the rent on the self storage unit.

@jazzbeau507 I am chuckling with heartfelt interest because one time I needed written proof I was not where an accident happened but my assistant manager wrote my name on the accident report. Always remember self storage is rent on things you don't need. That 60$-100$ a month could paying a bill or a nice meal somewhere, I always say if you have the ability occasionally take a day off and organize and throw stuff away. It's amazingly relaxing to clear the clutter, the only things I wouldn't throw away is old games, cards, and anything considered collectible through a simple google search.

But some folks think they’ll hit the jackpot. While living in Florida 14 years I tried Lotto many times but not constant. It was a loser. After tax proceeds will be $557 Million accouding to the radio news. IMHO the pandemic will wake people up about gambling. Time will tell.
